Overview

This renovation project involved a large-scale upgrade of a long-standing technology center in Knutsford, Cheshire, UK.The facility plays a vital role in supporting data processing operations and houses critical infrastructure, including fiber-optic networks and extensive rooftop equipment.

Problem

This aging data center facility, undergoing significant renovation, presented a series of complex challenges for the Fibergrateproject team. A large amount of equipment was being installed on the roof, including extensive cable trays for current and future use. These installations created numerous obstacles in a confined area, making it difficult for workers to access equipment safely and efficiently. A solution was needed to provide safe navigation over and around these obstructions, without compromising the integrity of the roof.

Solution

To solve the problems on site, a complete and custom access system was installed.

Custom Access Structures
FRP step overs and stair solutions were built to help workers move safely across rooftop obstacles.

Roof Protection
Rubber pads were placed under all structures to spread the load and protect the roof membrane from damage.

Safe Equipment Access
FRP service riser gratings were added to give safe access to riser cupboards with fiber-optic cables.

Expert Installation
The team handled the full installation, making sure everything was done safely, correctly, and with no delays.

The access systems were built using FRP, which offered several key benefits:

  • Corrosion Resistance: Ideal for outdoor and rooftop environments

  • Non-Conductivity: Safe to use around electrical and fiber-optic systems

  • Lightweight: Easy to transport and install

  • Durability: Long-lasting with low maintenance needs

  • Slip Resistance: Improves safety for workers in all weather conditions

Fibergrate project team delivered a tailored access solution that met all site requirements. The solution ensured safe navigation, protected sensitive infrastructure, and an on-timeinstallation to minimize disruption to the ongoing renovation process. The result was a reliable, low-maintenance system designed to consistently meet operational standards—even in the most demanding environments.
